May 17th: Room Change & T-shirts

We have three more club meetings (including this week). Please remember to get your SGO cards!

Due to AP exams, the club will be meeting in ROOM 6C2.

T-shirts and hoodies came in and we’ll be handing them out this week. Please bring your student ID or receipt.

March 29th’s Koi

Okay, so last week, we pretty much finished about 6 koi fishes, which is good enough, but more couldn’t hurt. This is going to decorate the alumni event. They are pretty bland, so I bought some construction paper and we’re going to tear some random pieces and stick it to the kois to add color. The kois also need more finishing to help hold their shapes and to add details.

Overall March 29th’s Koi:

  • Anyone who didn’t finish their koi should join and finish
  • Anyone else can help decorate, we’ll be tearing up construction paper to add splotches to the kois
  • Others can help detail the kois and shape them into perfection

March 29th Meeting

The diagrams and video pages have been updated.

This week, we will focus on wrapping up a couple of workshops and hold some new ones that aren’t for the Alumni Homecoming. We still need a couple more pieces but we’d like your input on what else we can fold to decorate at least two more columns. Please comment or contact us to give us your suggestions

Other reminders:

  • Final orders for t-shirts and hoodies will be collected this week! If you are interesting in making a purchase, make sure you have exact change for this week’s meeting. Otherwise, you will have to find Ms. Hsiao in 6C5 asap.
  • Applications/nominations for officers will close this week. To apply, please proceed here.

Relay for Life Lottery

In order to encourage everyone to take part in this event, we will be holding a lottery for those who participate to have a chance to win a FREE origami club shirt. Check this link to sign up for teams (the list is likely to be updated as we get closer to April 21st). Alyssa will be at the event for Key Club so please find her so she can put you down as an attendee.

Google Celebrates Akira Yoshizawa

Helllllllllllo everyone!

Just found something cool that I wanted to share!

Google is celebrating Akira Yoshizawa who was the guy who created wet folding origami and it was just something cool that I found interesting.

Here’s a link to an article in the LA times, check it out!

It’s also π day! (And Einstein’s Birthday as well.) Celebrate origami people \o/

March 15th Meeting

This week we will be continuing the same workshops from last week (for members who want to learn something new or to want finish up) and continue making origami for the Alumni Homecoming. Please remember that the pieces for this event has to be worked on during club. I will be teaching a new kusudama but will help those who need help with the ostrun model.

Please make sure you have exact change if you plan to buy a t-shirt ($12) or a hoodie ($25).

Recruiting Officers

We are recruiting officers for next year so if you are interested, please contact Ms. Hsiao.

Those who become officers will shadow the current board members for the remainder of the year to learn the responsibilities of their position. Main responsibilities include helping to facilitate workshops and taking attendance.

March 8th Meeting

Sorry for the late update! We had to finalize a bunch of fine details.
First off, we understand there are Major Selections after school so we are not expecting everyone to be in attendance. But as of now, there is still a club meeting tomorrow.

Preview of T-shirt

T-shirts/Hoodies

This is probably what the Origami T-shirt will look like (though I believe the ink will not be so green). Click: To see the t-shirt and to see the hoodie.
T-shirts will be charcoal and hoodies will be black. The price for the t-shirt is $12. The price for the hoodie is $25. We will be collecting money during the next two meetings (so we can put in the order asap since it will take some time to get the apparel printed). Please make sure you have exact change. You will receive a receipt that you should keep for when the shirts arrive.

Relay for Life

Due to time constraints, the Origami Club will not have a team for Relay for Life but we will donate the money we have raised to the organizations in charge. However, this does not mean that members should not go. We are encouraging everyone to take part in this event by joining other teams. For those who participate, you will be able to enter a lottery to win a FREE origami club shirt. We are still working out the details on how to prove you attended and we’ll let you guys know then.
The event will be held on April 21st. To sign up for a team, please visit the site here. It will be a lot of fun! If you didn’t go to the kick-off last Friday and have any more questions about Relay for Life, just comment or email us.

Alumni Homecoming

We will continue to work on the folding origami for the homecoming over the next several weeks because we still need at least 40 large neatly folded pieces to decorate the lunchroom. Although there are new workshops, we are hoping that the pieces being made will be made for this event. The origami for the Alumni Homecoming can only be made during club (we will not allow members to bring them home to finish). So for those in modular workshops, please work together in groups to complete as many pieces as possible.

On to the workshops.

T-shirt

Here's the back. Thank you Mr. Fung for helping us draw the crane in Inventor!

Silly me. I forgot I had to approve comments for each user at least once to prevent spam so I didn’t realize there were suggestions already (and here I thought no one was interested) my bad

Anyhow, please know there are limitations on design choices (we can only have two colors on the shirt). We only received two t-shirt designs so we tried to incorporate both. Feel free to offer any more feedback by commenting (including color choices)! The current color scheme is teal and white on a dark grey t-shirt (if I may, I must say I would prefer not to have another black t-shirt this year).

Note these are just drafts and I will fix up the little perks with alignment and such. There are three choices for how the front should be so please vote and we’ll choose the one with the greatest number of votes. There are two choices for the cube specifically; you may choose between “Brooklyn Technical High School” or “Brooklyn Tech” (2nd option is shown in the t-shirt designs) – and the letters will be fixed to conform to the shape of the cube. (You may vote as many times as you wish.)

Relay for Life/Club Credit/T-shirts Poll

There is no club next week.

Thank you for all your hard work today!  The PTA fundraiser went very well and we were able to raise more than $150 for Relay for Life.

For those who are wondering:

Brooklyn Technical High School is teaming up with the American Cancer Society to host a BTHS Relay for Life. A Relay for Life is a cancer event that helps us remember survivors, victims and fighters of the disease. Relay for Life is an event where groups of people get together to raise money and celebrate those who have battled cancer while marching a designated track. There will also be music, dance performances and other fun-filled activities.

In the month of April we will be walking around the track to raise money.

The date for this even has not been decided. However, members who wish to participate will be asked to register under our team (BTHS Origami Club) between February 17, 2012 and April 2, 2012.

Club Credit

Regarding club credit, as most of your are wondering. Ms. Hsiao contacted Mr. Kaelin and we received this response:

Students can purchase SGO cards for use in this school year. When they buy an sgo card, they must register it online and check off their activities. We will give you a list based on those registrations and you will enter the credits on that list. Right now, there are very few origami club members with SGO cards.

I am unsure whether they even have new SGO cards but apparently you can buy one and receive last years; and later you can trade them in for a new one. Either way, please make sure you follow these instructions! Register SGO cards here.

Once again, club credit is mainly based on attendance and handing in a project. The color requirement for a project is no longer required however, but please consider SIZE: about 6″x6″/8″x8″ for 2-D pieces and 6″x6″ for 3-D modules. Write your name on them so we know it will not be for selling in the future!

T-shirts

Board members are currently considering design choices for the Origami Club t-shirt. However, we would like to know how many of you are interested in buying the shirt (you may use it for gym) so we can estimate a quota for costs (the more t-shirts we buy, the cheaper it can be – we are hoping for at least 50 interested members). We are still deciding on color choices so please comment on what color shirt you would prefer and we’ll take this into consideration.

Happy Lunar New Year

Fish

Kawamura’s Infinity and Neale’s Dragon has been added to the videos page.
The angel fish tutorial has been added to the diagrams page.

Below are tutorials for making red envelope related pieces.

Dollar Koi Fish & Slinky, Fundraising & Paper

The diagram and a approximate 80 min series of videos (eight parts) for making the dollar koi fish has been added as well as two videos of the different variations of slinky.

For Koi Fish: Step 21 is the 3 bi-directional half fold, step 22 is the 6 bi-directional half folds, it is preferred that you have up to step 30 done by next week (but up to step 24 is OK). Remember that the top of Washington’s head is always faced towards you.

In other news, please look forward to making some lunar new year related pieces out of red envelopes next week. Workshops will be up as soon as they want to appear.

We are also encouraging members to buy tickets for Dogtown & Z-Boys, a documentary about skateboarding and how it grew into a popular activity. The movie is being hosted by STOKED, tech’s skateboard/snowboard/surfboard club, to fundraise for their activities. Tickets are $5 in the form of a bracelet and are sold during lunch periods. The movie will take place on Thursday, January 19th in the auditorium. Since it’s taking place on the same day as our meeting, we’ll have a sign-up for those who go so we know and you can show us the bracelets later on and we’ll count it as attendance.

New Paper!

Please remember to start handing in your projects (more info here).

Our club will be fundraising to raise more money for supplies on February 2nd and we want to have some origami to sell and a collection show off your work!

We recently got a new shipment of origami paper from DonorsChoose.org, where Ms. Hsiao posted our club initiative and received funding for supplies. If you need paper to fold (for your project or for the fundraiser), please feel free to see contact Ms. Hsiao to schedule a meeting where she’ll give the supplies you need.
